Is applying kohl (surma) recommended, and how should it be done?
Chapter on Utensils
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
Applying kohl is recommended (*mustahabb*). It is recommended to apply it an odd number of times (*watran*). This practice is supported by the action of the Prophet, peace be upon him, as reported through Jaber ibn Abdullah, stating: "Adhere to ithmid (antimony), for it clarifies the vision and causes hair to grow." Imam Ahmad preferred applying it an odd number of times, though he noted that the basis for this specification lacked a full chain of transmission (*isnād*). However, a supporting narration from Abu Dawud indicates that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever applies kohl, let him do so an odd number of times. Whoever does so has done well, and whoever does not, there is no blame upon him."

There is a differing opinion regarding the distribution of the odd count: some state it should be three times in each eye, while others suggest three times in the right eye and two times in the left, ensuring the odd count is achieved across both eyes combined.
