Is the area cleansed by dry wiping considered pure after the cleansing is complete?
Chapter on Cleaning oneself (Istitabah) and Impurity (Hadath)
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
The apparent view of Ahmad is that the site of dry cleansing is pure after purification is achieved. This is supported by evidence that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'Do not cleanse yourselves with dung or bone, for they do not purify,' implying that other things do purify. Furthermore, the prevalent practice of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) was dry cleansing in hot climates, and they did not transmit any avoidance or caution regarding sweat, suggesting they considered the area purified.

The view of Ibn Hamid and the later Imami scholars, matching the view of Al-Shafi'i and Abu Hanifa, is that the area remains impure. They argue that dry wiping is a mere removal of the impurity, not purification, similar to other forms of wiping. Consequently, if a person who has used dry cleansing sits in a small amount of water, the water becomes impure, and their sweat is also impure because it is a wiping of impurity that did not purify the site.
