Primary text

The ruling on yellow or brown discharge is the same as that of fresh blood: it is menses if seen during the days of the established menses, and the beginner (mubtadi'ah) refrains for the same duration she would refrain from other blood. If seen after the established habit days, it is treated as other irregular bleeding. If she becomes pure (tathur) and then sees brownish or yellowish discharge, it is disregarded based on the narrations from Umm 'Atiyyah and Aisha.

Supporting text

Al-Qadi interprets the narration from Asma (regarding refraining until pure white discharge) to mean that one should not heed the discharge before it is repeated, and that Asma's statement applies when repetition occurs, thus reconciling the hadiths.
