Is Ghusl obligatory upon a woman after menstruation (Hayd)?
Chapter on What Necessitates Ghusl
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
There is no dispute regarding the obligation of Ghusl following menstruation. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded Ghusl due to menstruation in numerous Hadiths. He instructed Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh to cease prayer for the duration of her usual menses, then perform Ghusl and pray (agreed upon Hadith). He also commanded it in the Hadith of Umm Salamah, the Hadith of 'Adiyy ibn Thabit from his father from his grandfather (narrated by Abu Dawud and others), and in the Hadiths of Umm Habibah, Sahlah bint Suhayl, and Hamnah bint Jahsh, among others. Furthermore, the interpretation concerning the Almighty's saying, 'And when they have purified themselves, then go to them as Allah has ordained for you' (Quran 2:222), is that it means 'when they have bathed' (performed Ghusl). This implicitly prohibits the husband from intercourse before the Ghusl, which indicates its obligation upon her.
