Is an individual required to pay someone to perform ablution (Wudu) for them if they are unable to do it themselves?
Chapter on the Obligation of Purification
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If an individual has both hands amputated and finds someone willing to perform Wudu for them voluntarily, it is obligatory upon them, as they are capable (of receiving the service). If they find someone who will perform Wudu for them only for a fee they can afford, it is also obligatory, just as purchasing water is obligatory. This is the position of Al-Shafi'i, and no contrary opinion is known on this specific point.
Supporting text
Ibn Aqil suggests that it might not be obligatory, similar to how one who cannot stand in prayer is not required to hire someone to hold them up. Furthermore, if one cannot afford the fee or cannot find someone to hire, they pray according to their ability, similar to one who cannot find water or dry earth for Tayammum.
