Primary text

The command in the Quranic verse regarding wiping over the head is interpreted to include wiping over a barrier placed upon the head, such as a turban. The Prophet's action of wiping over the turban serves as the necessary explanation and interpretation of the divine text. The physical act of wiping usually involves touching the hair, which itself is a barrier between the hand and the scalp. Therefore, the turban functions similarly as a permissible barrier over which wiping is valid, just as there is consensus on wiping over the barrier covering the feet (khuffayn).
