Is it disliked to perform Wudu or Ghusl using Zamzam water?
Chapter on what purification is achieved with regarding water
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
It is not disliked to perform ablution (Wudu) or ritual bathing (Ghusl) with Zamzam water because it is pure water, being analogous to all other waters. This opinion is considered preferable. The statement of Al-Abbas regarding it not being permissible for bathing is not taken at its apparent meaning of prohibition, thus it is less likely to imply dislike for other uses. Its nobility does not necessitate dislike for its use, similar to water into which the Prophet placed his hand or from which he bathed.
Supporting text
It is disliked to use Zamzam water for Wudu or Ghusl based on the statement attributed to Al-Abbas: "I do not permit it for bathing." Furthermore, it is considered disliked because the water removes an impediment to prayer (i.e., impurity), which is analogous to removing physical impurity (najasah) with it. For one in the state of Ihram (consecration for Hajj/Umrah), using it for hydration is permissible, but not for bathing.
