Is it obligatory to repeat the prayer performed via Tayammum if water or dust becomes available afterward?
Chapter on Tayammum
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If a person prays according to their condition due to lack of water or dust, and subsequently finds water or earth, one narration holds that repeating the prayer is not required. This is the correct position because the individual has fulfilled what they were commanded to do, having satisfied the requirement based on the available means, similar to a person unable to find a *Satrah*, facing the wrong Qibla, or unable to stand during prayer. Since they performed their duty according to their ability, repetition is not incumbent.
Supporting text
The second narration requires repetition, which is the view of Al-Shafi'i, based on the analogy that the condition for prayer (purification) was missed, similar to praying while impure with *Najasah* (filth). The analogy made by Abu Hanifa to the menstruating woman in delaying the fast is invalid because fasting allows for delay while prayer does not, evidenced by the traveler delaying the fast but not the prayer. Furthermore, equating lack of water to menstruation would nullify prayer entirely, and analogy within the same act of worship (prayer to prayer) is preferable to analogy with fasting.
