There are two opinions regarding the obligation to wash the sides of an impure well. One opinion mandates washing because the location is impure, similar to the wellhead. The second opinion states washing is not obligatory due to the hardship involved, analogous to the area used for Istinja (cleansing after relieving oneself) or the sole of a shoe, which are pardoned.
