Primary text

The correct position is that combining obligatory prayers is permissible with a single Tayammum, provided they fall within the time of the first prayer. The justification is that since the purification permitted two missed obligatory prayers (Qada'), it permits combining two present obligatory prayers, analogous to water purification. The permission to perform missed prayers establishes a precedent for combining acts.

Al-Mawardi, following the Shafi'i school, asserts that the Muutayammim cannot combine prayers at all because the second prayer requires a subsequent act of seeking water, which breaks the required sequence (Muwalah) for combination. Furthermore, some scholars limit the scope based on reports suggesting only making up missed prayers and voluntary prayers are permitted, excluding the combination of two present obligatory prayers.
