Primary text

The food and drink of the People of the Book are permissible. This ruling is established by the statement of Allah: "...and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you as is your food lawful for them" (Quran 5:5). Furthermore, there is evidence from the actions of the Companions, such as the incident where the Messenger of Allah smiled after Abdullah ibn Mughaffal took hold of fat from Khaybar, and the report that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was hosted by a Jew with bread and rancid fat (ihalah). Umar also purified water from a Christian water skin (jarra).
