Primary text

The correct view is that facing the Qibla or turning the back to it is permissible in a built structure. This is inferred from the hadith of Jabir, understood to refer to a structure, and the sound hadith of Aisha, which is considered the strongest report regarding permission. This specific ruling pertaining to structures takes precedence over the general prohibition applicable to the open desert, as evidenced by the practice of Ibn Umar in a structure.

Ahmad reported that turning the back to the Kaaba is permissible in both structures and the open, based on the narration that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was seen on the roof of Hafsa's house, facing Sham while turning his back to the Kaaba.
