Primary text

The primary opinion holds that recitation of the Quran in the bathhouse is discouraged (Makruh). Imam Ahmad stated that there is no established basis for it. Abu Wa'il, Ash-Sha'bi, Al-Hasan, Mak'hul, and Qubaysa ibn Dhu'ayb disliked it. The reasoning for this disapproval is that the bathhouse is a place where uncovering occurs and actions unsuitable for other places are performed, thus necessitating the protection (sanctity) of the Quran from it.

The view permitting recitation in the bathhouse is also held. Al-Nakha'i and Malik permitted it, based on the permissibility of general remembrance of Allah mentioned previously. The preferred view is that recitation is permissible because no definitive evidence prohibiting it has been established.
