Primary text

If a menstruating woman is in a state of janabah, she is not required to perform the ghusl (ritual bath) until her menstruation ceases. Ahmad stated this definitively, and it is the position held by Ishaq. The rationale is that performing ghusl during the menses yields no permanent ruling change; however, if she performs the ghusl for janabah during her menses, the ghusl is valid, and the ruling of janabah is lifted. Ahmad stated that janabah is removed, but the menses remains until the blood flow stops. He noted that he is unaware of anyone who holds the view that she should not perform ghusl at all.

Supporting text

Ata initially held the view that menstruation (*hayd*) is the greater impurity and thus takes precedence, implying the ghusl should be delayed. However, he later retracted this position and stated that she should perform the ghusl. This is because one ritual impurity does not prevent the removal of another, similar to when someone in a state of minor ritual impurity performs ghusl.
