Linguistically, Tayammum signifies intention or aiming for something, as established by divine decree: "And do not intend the removal of the vile from it that you would spend" (Quran 2:267). This meaning is also attested in pre-Islamic poetry, such as when Imru' al-Qays stated he aimed for a specific water source.
