How many times must the impurity of a dog or pig, or that which originates from them, be washed?
Chapter on what purification is achieved with regarding water
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
The impurity originating from a dog, a pig, or their progeny necessitates washing seven times, with one of those washings being with earth (dirt). This is the position of Ash-Shafi'i. The sounder narration holds this view. This washing requirement is based on the command given regarding a dog lapping in a vessel.
Supporting text
A narration transmitted from Ahmad suggests washing eight times, with the eighth washing involving earth. This is reconciled by interpreting the number seven as referring to the washes themselves, and the earth being an eighth distinct element, thus combining the evidence of both reports.
