Primary text

The minimum duration for post-natal bleeding is not explicitly determined by religious text. Therefore, it reverts to what is actually observed, which can be a small or large amount. Evidence supports that even minimal bleeding constitutes Nifas because it is blood immediately following childbirth, similar to heavy bleeding. A narration mentions a woman who gave birth during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and saw no blood, and she was named 'Dhat al-Jufuf' (she who experienced dryness). Imam Ahmad transmitted that if she sees purity before a full day, the rulings of a pure woman do not apply to her.

Supporting text

Malik, Al-Awza'i, and Abu Ubayd hold that if she sees no blood, she should perform Ghusl (full ritual purification) and pray. Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Abu Thawr state the minimum duration is one hour. Abu Ubayd stated the minimum is twenty-five days. The view held is that the rulings of purity are not established unless she sees a full day of purity, as intermittent bleeding does not confirm purification because it would imply she does not miss prayer during Nifas, which contradicts clear religious texts and consensus.
