The majority of our scholars hold that a small amount of gold used for mending is not permissible unless required by necessity, such as for gold fillings (*anf al-dhahab*) or binding teeth. Abu Bakr permitted the minor use of both gold and silver based on the general permissibility of secondary material.

The prevailing opinion among our companions states that minor gold use is not permissible except out of necessity.
