Is the *Niyyah* (intention) required for the validity of *Tayammum* (dry ablution)?

Primary text

The *Tayammum* is not valid without an intention. This is the position of Rabi'ah, Malik, Al-Layth, Al-Shafi'i, Abu Ubayd, Abu Thawr, Ibn Al-Mundhir, and the Ashab Al-Ra'i (companions of opinion), based on the necessity of intention for *Wudu* (ablution). The intention must be to permit the prayer (*istibaha*), and intending to lift the state of minor ritual impurity (*Raf' Al-Hadath*) invalidates the *Tayammum* because it does not actually lift the impurity.

Supporting text

Al-Awza'i and Al-Hasan ibn Salih hold that *Tayammum* is valid without an intention.
