Does one ritual bath (ghusl) suffice when two mandatory causes for ghusl are combined, such as menses and major impurity (janabah)?
Chapter on Ghusl from Janabah (Major Impurity)
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
One ritual bath suffices for two mandatory causes for ghusl, such as menses and janabah, or the meeting of the two circumcised parts with ejaculation, provided the intent encompasses both. This is the view held by the majority of scholars, including 'Ata, Abu al-Zannad, Rabī'ah, Mālik, al-Shāfi'ī, Isḥāq, and the scholars of opinion (Aṣḥāb al-Ra'y). The evidence for this is that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed only one ghusl after sexual intercourse, which generally includes two elements (the act itself and ejaculation). Furthermore, since both are causes requiring ghusl, one bath suffices for both, similar to minor ablutions (wudu) covering both an accidental emission and contact with a woman.
Supporting text
A narration is reported from al-Hasan and al-Nakha'ī that a menstruating woman who is also in a state of janabah should perform two separate ghusls.
