Is performing Tayammum permissible for impurity located on clothing or parts of the body other than the body itself?
Chapter on Tayammum
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
Tayammum is not performed for impurity found on one's garment or on something other than the body. This is because Tayammum is a purification designated for the body, and thus it cannot substitute for washing an object external to the body, similar to how ritual washing cannot substitute for non-bodily purification. Additionally, when one is unable to use water, solid matter (Janid) cannot substitute for washing non-bodily items, unlike its substitution for the body in cases of ritual impurity.
