Is performing Tayammum permissible or required during a journey undertaken for sin (safar al-ma'siyah)?
Chapter on Tayammum
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
Tayammum is permissible and applicable regardless of whether the journey is one of obedience or one of disobedience. This is because the ruling concerning Tayammum is an unmitigated permission (Azimah), not a concession (Rukhsah), and therefore, its allowance is not restricted to virtuous travel. Furthermore, it is a ruling not specific to travel and is thus permitted during a journey of disobedience, similar to the ruling concerning wiping over leather socks (Khuffayn) for a day and a night.
