Does a person who has not lost control of their intellect due to sleep require ablution?
Chapter on What Nullifies Purification
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
Ablution is not required for one whose intellect is not overcome, because sleep involves overcoming the intellect. The Arabic term *sunnah* (mentioned in Quran 2:255) refers to the initial drowsiness in the head, which becomes sleep when it reaches the heart. If the intellect and senses remain active, such as hearing and understanding what is said, the cause for invalidation has not occurred.
Supporting text
If one doubts whether they slept or if a thought merely crossed their mind, ablution is not required.
