Must a person repeat the prayer performed by Tayammum if water becomes available afterward, assuming the lack of water was due to confinement?
Chapter on Tayammum
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
There are two established views regarding the obligation to repeat the prayer if water is found after performing Tayammum due to a rare circumstance like confinement. One view states that repetition is obligatory, which is the position of Al-Shafi'i, because this rare excuse does not negate the need for making up the obligation later, similar to menstruation concerning fasting.

The second view states that repetition is not required, which is the position of Malik. This is because the person fulfilled the commanded duty, thus discharging their responsibility. Since the person prayed with the prescribed Tayammum in the prescribed manner, they are likened to the sick or the traveler. The general meaning of the Hadith also supports non-repetition.
