What is the prescribed amount for the Kaffarah (expiation)?
Chapter on Menstruation
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
There are two established narrations regarding the amount of the expiation. The first narration states that the expiation is either one Dinar or half a Dinar, allowing the person to choose whichever amount they pay, and it will suffice. This is narrated from Ibn Abbas. The second opinion mandates that the amount depends on the color of the blood: one Dinar if the blood is red, and half a Dinar if the blood is yellow. This is the position of Ishaq. The evidence cited for this differentiation based on color is the Hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas, tracing back to the Prophet, peace be upon him, stating: "If it is red blood, then one Dinar, and if it is yellow blood, then half a Dinar." This hadith is recorded by Al-Tirmidhi.
Supporting text
Al-Nakh'i stated that if the blood is expelled at the beginning (the fresh flow), the expiation is one Dinar, and if it is at the end (the lighter flow), it is half a Dinar. However, the sounder view affirms that the correct narration is that one should give charity of one Dinar or half a Dinar, indicating a choice, not a fixed requirement based on color or timing. Furthermore, since this ruling is connected to the menstrual discharge, it should not be differentiated between its beginning and its end, similar to its other rulings.
