What is the prescribed manner for searching for water prior to performing Tayammum?
Chapter on Tayammum

Book of Purification
Primary text
The prescribed manner of searching requires one to first look within one's dwelling. If signs of water, such as greenery, are observed, one must proceed there and thoroughly investigate. If there is a mound or a prominent object nearby, one should approach it and search there. If not, one must look ahead, behind, to the right, and to the left. If one is traveling with companions (rifqah), one must inquire among them. If an experienced person familiar with the area is present, one must ask about the water sources. If no water is found through these means, one is considered lacking water. If water is indicated nearby, one must proceed to it unless there is fear for one's self or property, or fear of missing one's companions, provided the prayer time has not expired. This is the view of Al-Shafi'i.
