What is the priority when physical impurity (najasah) is on the garment, and the person also has ritual impurity (hadath) with insufficient water for both washing the garment and performing Wudu?
Chapter on Tayammum
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If the physical impurity (najasah) is on the garment while ritual impurity (hadath) is present, the garment's impurity must be washed first, and then Tayammum must be performed for the ritual impurity. This is considered superior because if one prioritizes washing bodily impurity (najasah) even when Tayammum could potentially substitute for the ritual impurity, then prioritizing the purification of the garment over maintaining Wudu via water is more appropriate given the textual establishment of Tayammum for hadath.
Supporting text
A narration from Ahmad suggests that the person should perform Wudu (ablution) using the water and leave the garment impure, based on the reasoning that the person has access to water, and Wudu is considered more stringent (ashadd) than washing the garment. This view was also narrated by Abu Hanifa on the authority of Hammad concerning blood impurity (damm).
