Primary text

Purification is not required after the passing of wind. Neither the Book of Allah nor the Sunnah of the Messenger mandates Istinjaa for wind; instead, Wudu' (ablution) is incumbent. Evidence for this is found in the verse concerning standing for prayer, which commands washing the face upon rising from sleep: Quran 5:6. This verse indicates what is required, and no further purification is mentioned, as Istinjaa is legislated only for the removal of impurity, and no impurity is present when only wind is discharged.

Supporting text

A severe warning is recorded against those who perform Istinjaa for wind: 'Whoever performs Istinjaa from wind is not one of us,' narrated by At-Tabarani. This narration serves to reinforce that Istinjaa is completely unnecessary and inappropriate following the passage of wind.
