Primary text
If a person prays and afterwards discovers a nearby water source, no re-performance of prayer is required if the water source was hidden without any sign and could not be found after searching, as this is not due to negligence on the person's part. Those who hold this view include the scholars who believe re-performance is not necessary when water is found later. The consensus among scholars, as reported by Abu Bakr ibn al-Mundhir, is that no re-performance is obligatory if water is found after the prescribed time for the prayer has passed. Furthermore, even if the water is found within the prayer time, re-performance is not obligatory whether the person despaired of finding water or expected its presence. This is supported by the ruling concerning someone who is impure (*junub*) who delays prayer until the end of the time, performing dry ablution if water is not found, as narrated regarding Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed the companion who performed dry ablution, found water within the time, and did not repeat the prayer that he had followed the Sunnah and his prayer sufficed, while the one who repeated received a double reward. This ruling is also supported by the precedent of Ibn Umar who performed dry ablution near the city, prayed Asr, entered the city while the sun was still high, and did not repeat the prayer.
