What is the recommended manner for performing rinsing the mouth (madmadah) and inhaling water into the nose (istinshaq) during ablution?
Chapter on the Obligation of Purification
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
It is recommended to perform rinsing the mouth and inhaling water into the nose using the right hand, followed by expelling the water from the nose using the left hand. This practice is supported by the actions narrated from Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), who rinsed his hands thrice, then took water in his right palm, used it for both rinsing the mouth and inhaling water into the nose simultaneously, and expelled the water using his left hand, repeating this three times. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated performing the same action three times. Furthermore, it is recommended to perform both rinsing the mouth and inhaling water from a single scoop of water (ghurfah), as preferred by Abu Abdullah. This is evidenced by the narration of Abdullah ibn Zayd, stating that the Prophet (peace be upon him) rinsed his mouth and expelled water from a single scoop three times. Another narration from Bukhari confirms that he rinsed and expelled the water three times from a single scoop.
Supporting text
It is permissible for the person performing ablution to use three separate scoops for rinsing the mouth and three separate scoops for inhaling water into the nose. This permissibility is established because it has been narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) separated the rinsing of the mouth and the inhaling of water into the nose in one narration (Hadith of Talhah ibn Musarrif), and because the specific method of scooping water is not obligatory.
