Primary text

There are two narrations concerning the obligation of repeating the prayer performed with Tayammum due to fear of cold. The stronger opinion is that no repetition is required. This view is held by Al-Thawri, Malik, Abu Hanifa, and Ibn al-Mundhir. The primary evidence is that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not command Amr ibn al-As to repeat his prayer. Moreover, because the person feared for their life, the Tayammum suffices, similar to a sick person, and they have fulfilled the command for prayer.

The second narration holds that repetition is obligatory, which is the position of Abu Yusuf and Muhammad. They analogize this to forgetting ritual purity, where repetition is necessary because the excused condition is rare and non-continuous. Abu al-Khattab differentiated based on location, requiring repetition only if the person was a resident because residence implies the ability to heat water or access baths, unlike travel.
