What is the required intention (Niyyah) for ritual purification (Taharah)?

The intention for ritual purification must be to permit an act that requires purity, such as prayer (Salah), circumambulation (Tawaf), or touching the Mushaf (Quran). Furthermore, one must intend to lift the ritual impurity (Hadath), which signifies the removal of the barrier preventing any act requiring purity. This ruling is agreed upon by all scholars who mandate the intention for purification.
