It is necessary to specify what the ablution is for: minor impurity, major impurity, menstruation (*hayd*), or uncleanness (*najasah*). If one intends purification from all of them with a single ablution, it suffices because the act is singular, resembling the purity achieved by water.

If one intends the ablution for only some of the specified states, it suffices only for what was intended and not for the remainder.
