Primary text

The individual in a state of minor or major ritual impurity is pure and not physically impure. The evidence for this is the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah where the Prophet (peace be upon him) told him after he washed upon meeting him while he was janib: 'Glory be to Allah, a Muslim does not become physically impure (najis).'

Supporting text

The counter-argument that used water is impure is refuted by the fact that a person in a state of hadath would not render water impure by dipping their hand in it, nor would touching something moist or carrying something impure invalidate the prayer of one performing it. Their reasoning that the prohibition against washing in standing water while janib is like the prohibition against urinating in it is countered by stating that the prohibition concerns its continued use for purification, not that the water becomes fundamentally impure like urine.
