Is ritual washing obligatory upon emission of seminal fluid during wakefulness or sleep?

The outpouring of seminal fluid accompanied by desire necessitates *ghusl* for both the man and the woman, whether they are awake or asleep. This is the position held by the general body of jurists (*Jumhur al-Fuqaha*), as stated by Al-Tirmidhi, and no known disagreement exists on this point.
