What is the ruling on colored discharge (yellowish or brownish) during the supposed menstrual period?
Chapter on Menstruation
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If a woman sees a yellowish or brownish discharge during her established menstrual days, it is considered menses. If she sees it after the established days of her menses have passed, it is not considered menses. This is affirmed by Ahmad, and similarly held by Yahya al-Ansari, Rabi'ah, Malik, ath-Thawri, al-Awza'i, Abdurrahman ibn Mahdi, ash-Shafi'i, and Ishaq. The basis for this is the verse: 'And they ask you about menstruation. Say, 'It is an ailment' (Quran 2:222), which encompasses both yellow and brown discharge. Furthermore, Aisha narrated that women would send her pads with yellow or brown discharge, and she would instruct them not to rush until they saw the pure white discharge (al-qassah al-bayda'), indicating purity from menses.
Supporting text
Abu Yusuf and Abu Thawr hold that it is not menses unless preceded by black blood, based on the narration of Umm 'Atiyyah, who said: 'We did not count the yellow or brown discharge after purification (after washing).' This is interpreted to mean after the complete washing and cessation of flow.
