What is the ruling concerning pus (qayh) and mucus (sadid) exiting the body, compared to blood?
Chapter on What Nullifies Purification
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
Pus and mucus are treated the same as blood regarding the principle of invalidation if the amount is excessive. However, their ruling is considered easier and lighter than that of blood due to differing scholarly opinions. The view that considers pus and mucus equivalent to blood and applies the same ruling is the position of Mujahid, 'Ata', 'Urwah, Al-Sha'bi, Al-Zuhri, Qatadah, Al-Hakam, and Al-Layth. This view suggests that the excessive amount of pus/mucus that necessitates ablution is generally more than the excessive amount of blood.
Supporting text
It is narrated from Ibn 'Umar and Al-Hasan that they did not consider pus and mucus the same as blood. Abu Majlaz stated regarding mucus that there is no issue, as only flowing blood was mentioned in the Divine text. Al-Awza'i stated that if a sore leaks fluid resembling meat washings, there is no ablution required. Ishaq stated that everything other than blood does not necessitate ablution.
