What is the ruling concerning temporary cessation of bleeding during menstruation?
Chapter on Menstruation
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If bleeding ceases temporarily during the menstrual flow, it is not considered definitive purity. Ibn Abbas stated that concerning the dark (Bahraani) blood, the woman refrains from prayer, but if she sees purity even for an hour, she must perform Ghusl (ritual bath). Purity lasting less than a day is disregarded. This is based on the instruction given to Aisha, that one should not hasten Ghusl until seeing the white discharge (al-Qassah al-Baydaa'). Furthermore, blood flows intermittently, and a mere cessation does not establish purity, similar to a stoppage lasting less than an hour.
