What is the ruling on performing Tayammum when one finds only mud (teen) and no dry earth (turab)?
Chapter on Tayammum
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If a person finds only mud and no dry earth, Ibn Abbas permits taking the mud and coating his body with it. Once the mud dries, he performs Tayammum with it. If there is fear that the prayer time will expire before the mud dries, the ruling is the same as for one who finds no earth or purifying agent (al-'adim). It is probable that if the mud is expected to dry soon, one should wait for it to dry even if the prayer time is missed, drawing an analogy to the person searching for nearby water or one engaged in retrieving water from a well.
Supporting text
Applying mud only to the face is insufficient because it does not fulfill the name of 'sa'eed' (pure earth) and because it lacks dust, resembling damp earth (al-turab al-nadi).
