What is the ruling when a person performing prayer via Tayammum gains the ability to use water?
Chapter on Tayammum
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
The established position in the Madhhab is that if one performing Tayammum gains the ability to use water, their Tayammum is invalidated, whether this occurs during the prayer or outside of it. If it occurs during prayer, the prayer becomes void due to the invalidation of purification, and the person is obligated to use the water: performing Wudu if they had minor impurity or Ghusl if they had major impurity. This view is held by Al-Thawri and Abu Hanifah.

Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Abu Thawr, and Ibn Al-Mundhir hold that if the ability to use water is acquired during the prayer, the prayer should continue. This view was previously narrated from Ahmad, though later reports suggest his reversal of this opinion, based on the majority of hadiths indicating departure (to use water).
