What is the ruling on a person in a state of minor impurity (Haddath) touching the Qur'an?
Chapter on the Obligation of Purification
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
It is not permissible for a person in a state of minor ritual impurity (*Haddath*) to touch the Qur'an. The evidence for this is the Almighty's saying: 'None shall touch it except the purified' (Quran 56:79). Additionally, the Prophet’s letter to Amr ibn Hazm explicitly stated that no one should touch the Qur'an except one who is pure. This letter is widely transmitted.

Some scholars, such as Al-Hakam and Hammad, permitted touching the Qur'an only with the palm of the hand, arguing that the prohibition applies specifically to the inner surface of the hand, which is the instrument of touching. This view is rejected because anything that comes into contact with the scripture constitutes touching.
