Primary text

If the bleeding of the woman in postpartum confinement (Nifas) exceeds forty days and coincides with her usual menstrual cycle timing, then it is considered menstruation. If it does not coincide with her usual cycle, it is considered irregular bleeding (Istihadah). Imam Ahmad stated that if the bleeding is continuous, the woman should refrain from prayer and avoid marital relations if the bleeding occurs during the days she typically menstruates. If she has no established cycle, she is treated like a woman experiencing Istihadah: her husband may approach her, and she must perform ablution (Wudu) for every prayer, fast if Ramadan occurs, and she does not need to make up missed prayers.

Supporting text

It is recommended that the husband refrain from approaching his wife regarding intercourse until the forty days are fully completed. This view is held by Sufyan al-Thawri and Al-Shafi'i.
