What is the ruling when the prescribed time limit for wiping over the socks expires?
Chapter on Wiping over the Khuffayn (Leather Socks)
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
When the time limit expires, ablution (Wudu) is nullified. Wiping is no longer permissible unless the socks are removed and then worn again over complete purity. This position is supported by a foundational reasoning: the wiping served as a substitute for washing the feet, a condition for prayer, during the limited time. When the time expires, this substitute lacks further validity without new evidence. Furthermore, since the wiping itself cannot be initiated after the fact (i.e., cannot be started anew at that point), its continuation is also prohibited, analogous to a Tayammum user seeing water.

Al-Hasan held that ablution is not nullified, and one may pray until an invalidating event occurs, but after that, wiping is not permitted until the socks are removed. Dawud argued that removing the socks does not nullify purity, as nullification only occurs via a ritual impurity (*hadath*), and the time limit expiring is not *hadath*.
