Primary text

Al-Thawri and Abu Hanifah hold that the bones of other dead animals (besides those whose meat is forbidden) are pure. They argue that death does not affect the bone, just as it does not affect hair. The reason for impurity in flesh and skin is the attachment of blood and moisture, which is absent in bones. The evidence opposing this view relies on the verses of the Quran regarding resurrection (Qur'an 36:78-79), implying that what is revived must have experienced death. Since sensation and pain are indicators of life, and pain exists intensely in the bone, anything affected by life is also affected by death. That which death affects is rendered impure, similar to flesh.

The argument that the impurity is caused by attached blood and moisture has already been refuted previously.
