What is the ruling regarding a fallen fingernail?

Malik is of the view that if a fingernail falls off, it should be covered with mastic (mistaka), and wiping is performed over the mastic. This ruling is also adopted by the companions of the People of Opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y).
