What is the ruling regarding sexual intercourse (watu') with a woman whose bleeding exceeds the set period (six, seven days, or custom) but has not yet reached the maximum duration of menses?
Chapter on Menstruation
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If a woman observing a set period (one day and night, six, seven days, or her relatives' custom) sees blood for a duration exceeding that established time, sexual intercourse is forbidden until the bleeding ceases completely or until it exceeds the maximum duration of menses. This prohibition is based on the strong probability that the excess bleeding might still be actual menses. She is commanded to fast and pray in such instances as a precaution for her religious liability, and consequently, intercourse must be avoided as a precautionary measure.

If the bleeding stops and she performs the major ablution (ghusl), intercourse becomes permissible. There are two narrations regarding its dislike: one stating it is not disliked because she experienced pure cessation, resembling a non-initiating woman; the other stating it is disliked due to fear of the blood recurring, similar to a woman post-childbirth (nifas) whose bleeding stops before forty days.
