What is the ruling regarding sexual intercourse with a woman in postpartum bleeding (Nifas)?
Chapter on Menstruation
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
The woman in postpartum bleeding (Nifas) is treated the same as a menstruating woman (Ha'id) in this regard. The minimum due expiation is half a Dinar of any pure gold, whether it is unminted nugget (Tibr) or minted coin, as the name of the substance applies to both.

There are two differing opinions on whether the monetary equivalent (value) of the expiation can be paid instead of the prescribed gold. The first view permits paying the value because the objective—providing the required amount of wealth—is achieved regardless of the form of the wealth, similar to Khiraj (land tax) or Jizyah. The second view prohibits it because expiation is a specific penalty that must be paid with specific types of wealth, like other expiations.
