What is the ruling regarding the validity of the Hadith mentioning Kaffarah for intercourse during menstruation?
Chapter on Menstruation
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
The report concerning the required expiation is primarily transmitted through Abd al-Hamid ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn al-Khattab. Ahmad harbored reservations about this Hadith due to the narrator being Abd al-Hamid. Ahmad stated that if the Hadith concerning expiation were soundly established from the Prophet (peace be upon him), then expiation would be obligatory. However, he also stated there is no harm in it and that people have narrated from this individual, indicating ambiguity in his final view. The variance in the ruling on expiation stems from the variance in Ahmad's assessment of the Hadith.

It is reported that Ahmad stated that if the man has the means, he should give charity as mentioned in the narration attributed to the Prophet (peace be upon him). Abu Abdullah ibn Hamid stated that the expiation for intercourse during menstruation is waived if one is incapable of fulfilling it, or a portion of it, similar to the expiation for intercourse during Ramadan.
