What is the ruling regarding washing a hide after it has been tanned?

Even though the essence (ayn) of the hide becomes pure through tanning, washing it remains obligatory if it is subsequently contacted by an impurity, whether that impurity is something other than the tanning agent or the tanning agent itself after it has been separated from the hide.
