What is the ruling on the residual drink of felines and creatures smaller than them, such as mice and weasels?
Chapter on what purification is achieved with regarding water
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
The residual drink of the cat and creatures smaller than it in stature, such as mice and weasels, and similar ground creatures, is pure and permissible for drinking and ablution. This is the position of the majority of scholars among the Companions, Successors, the people of Medina, Syria, and the Kufan proponents of 'Ra'y' (opinion). This is strongly supported by the Hadith narrated by Kabshah bint Ka'b ibn Malik, where the Prophet peace be upon him stated, 'It is not impure; indeed, it is among those who go around among you (male and female).' This wording explicitly negates dislike concerning the cat's residual drink and, by extension, those that similarly circulate.

Abu Hanifa disliked ablution with a cat's residual drink, though performing it suffices. Ibn 'Umar and Yahya Al-Ansari disliked it, and Ibn Abi Layla also held this view. Abu Hurairah stated it should be washed once or twice. Al-Hasan and Ibn Sirin said to wash it once. Tawus said to wash it seven times, like a dog. A narration by Abu Dawud attributes to Abu Hurairah that if a cat licks a vessel, it should be washed once.
